Last week I had the privilege of attending an afternoon with the Shillington College graduates to review some of their portfolios, before their Christmas break.
Shillington College is a full-time intense Graphic Design course over the period of 3 months, or 6 months for part-time students. The tutors are Designers themselves too, so people are able to learn real and relevant industry skills. The course gives people (with no previous experience) the chance to work on exciting briefs in a fast-paced, fun environment.
I was invited to their Manchester offices to sit and informally chat with some of the recent graduates of the college and talk through examples of their work. For most people this is a good chance to gain further pre-interview experience whilst discussing their projects in a relaxed manner, prior to attending interviews in the industry. I was so interested to see what kind of approach each person had for their set briefs, all bringing their own personalities through. I thoroughly enjoyed going through them one by one, everyone I met seemed confident and proud of their work, which I guess is what it’s all about! Afterwards we followed up with any feedback to take away for future interviews.
In the evening, the graduates then had the opportunity to showcase their work to more family, friends and potential employers at the final presentation event, whereby people were invited to browse portfolios over a drink and chatter. Become happily attended too and we met with some real stars which i’m sure will progress into successful designers.
